How the Oyasumidokoro Was Created
Yasunari Okino

I was asked by some of the friends I met in the UK about the history of the Oyasumidokoro. Here I will try to describe how my friends and I came to open this place. First I must write about some important persons.

1. Shoko Uejima

I met Shoko(1955¡Á2007, poet, letter writer, editor, teacher) in 1993 when I was 17 and a high school student in Kyoto. My Japanese literature teacher took me to Rongakusha ÏÀ³Ú¼Ò, the old house in Kyoto where she and her former husband held lectures and seminars, in which people gathered to listen to and discuss what scholars and doctors and writers and artists had to say. I was interested in those meetings and became one of the many who helped their activities. They published the transcripts of the discussions, sold a variety of books, and taught children in very original ways. They took groups to visit Nagashima-Aiseien(ĹÅç°¦À¸±à one of the 13 national Hansen's disease sanatoria).

£². Noriko Ibaragi

It was mainly Shoko who wished to create Oyasumidokoro. Rongakusha was a good place to discuss problems people had. But she wanted to work more directly for people. And her close friend took her own life because of depression.

At that time she read the poem "Oyasumidokoro" by Noriko Ibaragi(1926¡Á2006, poet). Shoko was her friend and really loved her work. She was inspired. Her friends from near and far helped her to realize her dream--to make a good place for those who are spiritually exhausted to rest in nature.

Oyasumidokoro (A resting place)

Long ago, far away,
A road ran past a girls school
toward the village of Imagawa,
in the country of Mikawa,
where once roamed the great warrior Imagawa Yoshimoto.

Beside the sun-bleached road,
a faded crimson banner fluttered in the breeze
announcing "a resting place."
Modest and deserted,
little more than a roof tacked onto a bus stop,
it offered a few cups to turn and fill
with cool barley tea in summer,
hot tea in winter.

"Peddler, farmer, medicine seller,
you shouldering a heavy burden,"
it called out,
"stop and rest a while here,
quench your thirst
and then go on into town."

Not the insincerity of a vending machine,
but the kindness of an unknown person in the empty hut,
as still remain in way stations of long ago
and along pilgrims' paths.

"A resting place...
Maybe this is what I want to do in my life"

This thought came into my mind.
I was fifteen then, wearing a schoolgirl¡Çs sailor suit.

Now roadside chairs and benches are no more,
as if to say, "Don¡Çt sit here. Keep moving!"

****
One late fall, forty years ago,
I arrived at Nara Station by the night train.
Too early for the bus to Horyji temple,
I ate my box lunch from the day before.
The stationmaster brought tea
to the handful of travelers
huddled in the waiting room.

Time passed so slowly then.

I have forgotten his face,
but I still remember
his big kettle, his uniform,
and the flavor of the too-strong tea he gave me.

£³.Jiro Kitamikado

We had started to look for a good place to build the Oyasumidokoro some years before 2003. At that time we lived in Kyoto, but couldn't find a suitable place near there.

In 2002 we visited a translator of Tolstoy in Kumamoto in the southern part of Japan. Mr.Jiro Kitamikado(1913¡Á2004) was nearly 90 or so and had already had dementia when we visited him. But he still was a noble person, radiating peace. He said,"I have had much to be ashamed of in my life. The only good thing was that I didn't kill anybody. Please go far beyond my work."

He grew up prior to the World War ¶ when the Japanese government was becoming totalitalian. He read one of Tolstoy's work at the age of 17 and began to doubt what he had been taught: "To fight and die for the Emperor and Country is the duty of all Japanese." He was attracted to Tolstoy's work and quit Tokyo University to go to Russia alone to learn Russian to read Tolstoy directly.

Ultimately he followed Tolstoy's teachings and refused to go to the army. That meant death at that time, but he was thought to be insane and survived.

After that he lived as a farmer following Tolstoy's teachings. Later he pointed out how many mistakes other translators of Tolstoy's works were making, and started to translate the works himself after the age of 50.

He was so impressive that we tried to build the Oyasumidokoro in his village. With the cooperation of his family, an old house (built more than 100 years ago) was found. Shoko and I moved there in 2003. That was how the Oyasumidokoro started.

(It was Mr.Jiro Kitamikado's son who made the first Oyasumidokoro website.)

£´. The Oyasumidokoro Now

Shoko was a poet. Some people may say that the idea of Oyasumidokoro is very abstract and romantic. If an ordinary person were to speak of such an idea, it would sound a bit ridiculous. But she was different. She had the power of speech to move people. She had some kind of charisma and many people gathered around her and helped her. So her idea finally realized.

When we worked together, we could do many things. Welcoming guests to stay, writing journals and letters, holding art festivals and so on.

But a tragedy occurred. Shoko ended her own life four years after we created the Oyasumidokoro.

And there is another problem: the remote location of the Oyasumidokoro in Hiratani hamlet, Mizukami village, Kuma county, Kumamoto prefecture (Latitude: 32¡ë23'11.42"N Longitude: 131¡ë 2'30.26"E). As you can see using google maps, it is located deep in the mountains where it is very hard for those who are physically tired to come. Only those who were having stressful lives but in physically good health could come here. And also those who were interested in our activities and those who wanted to breathe in the fresh air and stimulate their minds came here, too. So the house is a little different from what we had imagined. Still those who really have mental problems can call me or write messages to me. It's not counselling in its true meaning, but I can apply what I have learned in the field of psychiatry to help them.

We've made no advertisement except for the blog, so only our friends or those who knew us through my friends visited here. If someday you have the chance to come to the southern part of Japan, please get in touch with me and visit here. You can enjoy the scenery of mountains, clear water, and tranquility.

12th,October,2010>
(Here I'd like to thank Gregory Vanderbilt for correcting my English.
The poem "Oyasumidokoro" was translated by him and me.)
