Caption: Dr. Cunanan told us, “Culion is a small island at the western edge of the Philippine archipelago. The leprosarium once known as “the world’s largest”opened here in 1906. The current population of the island is 20,000, all of whom are the descendents of former patients or staff. The founding director of Nagashima Aiseien, Kensuke Mitsuda (1876-1964), is said to have used Culion as the model for Aiseien. I took this photo when I visited Nagashima Aiseien last year. It looks just like Culion. Even people from Culion mistake it for here.”

The O-yasumi-dokoro (Resting Place) opened on May 1, 2003, in Mizukami Village, Kumamoto Prefecture, following our meeting Jiro Kitamikado (1913-2004) who lived out his life there, translating Tolstoy and living by his principles, even to the extent of refusing to be conscripted during World War II. It is a place for the spirit to pause and have a drink of cool water. Its founding members (all volunteers) are Yasunari Okino (psychiatrist), Gregory Vanderbilt (historian) and I (poet). It is also a place for healing trauma. It is a small community seeking to live vibrantly through everyday engagement with art, scholarship and psychiatry. We are groping our way to understanding the issues of war and peace.
